Special Olympics Community Service: Special Olympics

Summer Tutoring Team Summer Tutoring Team

Priory students in all grades are imbued with enthusiasm; "doing something" for causes they care about is a big part of campus life. Students volunteer time on the campus with jobs from tutoring to technical support. They renovate homes for people in need. They serve food at a community shelter, wash cars for the Red Cross, and help immigrants in their early days of adjusting to a new country. Students share these experiences and many others with their teachers through "Service Learning" in social studies and theology classes. Students also pursue volunteer experiences that they choose for themselves, with the support of the campus ministry program.

Middle School classes have time set aside for students to work as a group in planning their project, putting it into action, and then reflecting individually and together on what they learned. These are among their recent community service activities:

  • Restoring coastal dunes
  • Making and delivering blankets for babies who need them
  • Helping homeless animals at the local shelter
  • Hosting music concerts at local senior centers
  • Hosting a Special Olympics for handicapped children
  • Writing letters to government representatives
  • Making Christmas stockings for needy children
