Ceramics

This course covers everything from the basics of working with clay, to ancient firing techniques like Japanese Raku, as well as advanced studies of glaze mixing and working on the potters wheel. The course begins with an introduction to the ceramics studio including; tools, equipment, studio maintenance, safety, firing, and clay itself. During the first semester, the units of study will cover hand building techniques such as pinching, coiling, slab, slip casting, as well all aspects of working on a potters wheel. Students will learn the vocabulary and processes to build a strong foundation in ceramics. In the second semester students will explore functional and non-functional approaches to working with clay while continuing to learn about ceramics via discussions, and analysis of historical and contemporary works of art. Course Length: Year Long. Open to Grades: 10, 11, 12. Prerequisites: None.
